University Faculty Senate Minutes

I. Call to order by Dr. Floyd
Present: Dr. Neil Snider, Ms. Shannon White, Mr. Bill Lenning,
Mrs. Nancy Kudlaweic, Dr. Gene May, Dr. Alexander Mechitov, Dr.
June Westbrook, Mr. Charlie Cook, Mrs. Tina Jones, Dr. Richard
Schellhammer, Dr. Janis Beaird, Mrs. Donna Miller, Mr. Richard
Thurn, and Dr. Johan W. van der Jagt.
II. Approval of November 16, 1999 minutes
Charlie Cook moved and Bill Lenning seconded the motion that
the minutes be approved with the following corrections: III, p. 2,
last line should read: Dr. Taylor then listed the six criteria the
University was cited for in the previous NCATE Self-Study and
briefly addressed the continual problem of faculty diversity. He
also noted that of the 94 total NCATE criteria, we met all of the
others. The minutes were approved.
III. Old Business
A. Faculty Web Pages
Dr. Floyd reported that we now have approximately 48
faculty with web pages. He also reported that he has sent
personal notes to all remaining faculty encouraging them to
submit templates. He thanked Shannon White for her help with
the faculty web pages.
B. List Serve Discussion Group
This initiative has been delayed because of Y2K.
C. Faculty Senate History Committee Progress Report
Dr. Schellhammer reported that the committee is working on it.
D. Faculty Development Technology Initiative
Dr. Floyd reported that he and Randy Sterling would give a
one-hour workshop on Windows 95/98 on Dec. 1st at
3:30 p.m. in Bibb Graves 110. Several representatives
suggested that the workshop be planned for Assessment Day.
E. Noel Levitz Advisor Training & Academic Advising
No Comments.
F. UWA Higher Education Partnership Forum
Dr. Tenant McWilliams and Mr. Gordon Stone were recently on
campus and gave a PowerPoint presentation on the Partnership.
The presentation can be downloaded from the Faculty Senate
home page.
G. Faculty Sick Leave Bank
Dr. Beaird reported that the Committee has gotten the
policy from the University of Tennessee. She asked for other
universities she should write to obtain policies. The
Committee would like to present a plan to the Senate by Spring
Break.
H. Officer Eligibility—Constitution
No discussion.
I. Direct Deposit
Dr. Floyd reported that he has met with Dr. Roach and Mr.
Noland about this issue. The topic is currently under further
investigation to determine the ramifications for all involved.
J. Medical Saving Plan
Dr. Floyd reported that he is currently trying to find
examples form other universities.
K. Faculty Workload and Hours Draft
Dr. Floyd stated that feedback is due to Dr. Roach by Dec.
3rd. He asked representatives to give him comments
as soon as possible. He asked that individual faculty will
keep up with workload. He will find out if it will be used as
part of faculty assessment process.
IV. New Business
A. Academic Advising Web Page
Dr. Floyd reported that this is now available.
B. ACCUFP Meeting Report
The meeting was at UWA. Dr. Floyd thanked Dr. Roach for his
hospitality to the statewide meeting.
C. Summer Schedules
Dr. Floyd noted that the times for the four week classes are as
follows:
8:00- 9:40
10:10-11:50
12:20-16:30
17:30-21:15 MW or TTh
D. Faculty Advising Evaluations
Dr. Floyd noted that ACT provides a Survey of Academic
Advising Service to evaluate faculty in the area of student
advising. He circulated a copy of the ACT instrument. He
referred the issue to the Faculty Affairs Committee.
E. Committee Assignments
The assignments have been distributed.
F. Campus Directory Update
The Faculty Senate Campus Directory has been updated and a
listing by departments has been added. Dr. Floyd asked Faculty
to let him know if other corrections or changes needed to be
made.
G. Academic Calendar
Dr. Floyd asked for feedback on the two proposed academic
calendars that have been circulated. Dr. Floyd noted that the
main question is whether to begin the fall term two days
earlier to allow faculty and staff the entire week of
Thanksgiving off. He noted that the length of time for
pre-registration has been resolved.
There was discussion on finals. Some people advocated
starting finals on Saturdays, and some representatives
suggested that Assessment Day be held on the last day of the
semester.
H. Web-Based Registration
There is a good deal of interest, but the problem is money.
The University continues its efforts to find a way to make
web-based registration a reality.
I. Faculty Senate Home Page
Dr. Floyd reported that he has added a Faculty News section
on the main home page. The UWA Downloadable Page has been
significantly upgraded. Schedules for Office/Class hours are
here along with all the Tenure and Promotion forms. Almost all
other forms and logos are here. Soon, the remaining Mascots
and forms will be added. A link to the Cafeteria Menu is also
on the home page.
V. Adjournment
Dr. Gene May moved to adjourn and Mr. Bill Lenning seconded the
motion. The motion was passed and the meeting adjourned at
5:25 p.m.
