UWA FACULTY SENATE MINUTES
Thursday, June 26, 2003 - 3:30 p.m.
Wise Conference Room - Wallace Hall 213
I.
Roll Call
A special meeting of the UWA Faculty Senate was
called to order at 3:33 pm on Thursday, 26 June 2003. Present were: Dr. Janis
Beaird, Dr. Richard Schellhammer, Ms. Becky Graham, Mr. Mark Brothers, Dr.
Richard Collison, Dr. Tom Gonzalez, Dr. Mark Griffith, Ms. Sylvia Homan, Dr.
Nancy Kudlawiec, Dr. Pat Beatty, Dr. Gary Stone, and Mr. Howell Sheffield.
II. Order of Business for Special
Session
There being a quorum present, Dr. Janis Beaird
introduced an offer from the offices of Watson, DeGraffenried, Hardin, & Tyra
LLP and Rushton, Stakely, Johnston & Garrett, P.A. for legal representation of
the UWA Faculty Senate. With this legal representation, the Senate would be
represented during the litigation in the case of Preston Minus et. al. vs. Dr.
Richard Holland et. al. The Senate has the right to be represented during this
litigation, because the Senate, in their vote-of-no-confidence in one faction of
the Board of Trustees also supported the Administration’s request for a 10 per
cent tuition increase. Dr. Beaird then asked if anybody had any questions.
Dr. Gary Stone asked who contacted whom.
Dr. Beaird answered that a representative from the
law firm had contacted her, as the President of the Senate. She also noted that
the fees for the law firm are being paid for.
Dr. Stone suggested that all those present sign the
resolution in addition to the Senate President and President-elect in a sign of
solidarity. At the end of the resulting discussion, all those present agreed to
the plan.
Dr. Pat Beatty made a motion that the resolution
allowing the President of the Senate to represent the Senate and seek the legal
representation of Watson, DeGraffenried, Hardin & Tyra LLP and Rushton, Stakely,
Johnston & Garrett P.A., and that all those present affix their names to the
resolution be passed. Dr. Nancy Kudlawic seconded and the motion passed
unanimously.
III. Adjournment
The meeting was adjourned at 4:00 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Dr. Richard Schellhammer
